There is one glaring error in Rachel Maddow’s report and it comes when she says in terms of 2012 hopefuls that no one has said anything about egypt. This isn’t true, Ron Paul (who just won the straw poll at CPAC) has spoken more strongly for the people of Egypt and against American imperialism there than any other politician. If there is anyone remaining silent about the issue it’s the Democrats and most importantly Obama who basically said nothing during the last two weeks about Egypt. So there’s a lot of blame to go around on this one. The fact that the neocons love Mubarak isn’t really that surprising. Rachel should have instead looked at what are the real reasons why there has been this close relationship between the US and Egypt that survived 30 years and 5 presidents (3 republicans and 2 democrats). Who are the real beneficiaries of the relationship? Instead she kind of dumbed down the debate by the end of the segment. I think it’s because it’s impossible to get into the complexity of the relationship and put it into a format that most Americans could (or would want to) understand. They’d rather play the game of thinking the puppet on the left/right is to blame. Well in the case of Egypt, both Democrats and Republicans are to blame. Meanwhile the Egyptian people have decided that they get to control their futures. And there shouldn’t be any debate about “what the US should do next”. We should leave.
