Goldfish Has Stone Stuck in Mouth

Having a goldfish with a stone stuck in mouth can be a very scary experience. I came home from work to find my lionhead with a stone stuck in its mouth. After searching the internet looking how to get the stone out of my goldfish’s mouth I resorted to common sense. First, disinfect your hands, as goldfish can many times be sensitive to any residue on our hands. Then, net the goldfish out of the aquarium and put him into a small pot, or bucket. This is to make the goldfish easier to handle, and you can plop the goldfish with a stone stuck in his mouth back into the water if your first attempt at getting the stone out isn’t successful. Once you’ve got your goldfish with a stone stuck in its mouth into a bucket you’re going to want to net him, and then place him into the towel which you will cup with your hands. I found that if you gently push and pull the goldfish’s throat near his gills that his mouth will open up. Hold the goldfish in one hand and use your fingers to push on his throat and pull his mouth open. My goldfish had the stone stuck pretty far down his throat and I thought that I would have to put him out of his misery. Don’t give up. With the goldfish’s mouth open you’re going to want to place the tweezers inside the mouth (be careful not to push the stone farther down his throat) open up the tweezers (goldfish’s mouth are fairly flexible, but be gentle) and then slowly squeeze until you’ve got the stone. If the stone looks like it has gone further down his throat then plop him back into the water and give him some time to try and spit the stone out. After a few attempts you should be able to grab the stone, and then slowly pull it out of the goldfish’s mouth.
