My first duck. A small teal. The gun I’m holding was my second, my first being an octagon barreled .22 rifle, The gun I’m holding originally belonged to my uncle when he was a kid. So it’s from the late 1950′s. It’s  just a little single shot 410 shotgun. Age 8 .  1986.

The journal was created at Roosevelt Elementary School, in Bismarck, North Dakota.

September 8th 1986

Mrs Gilbertson’s (or as she was effectionately called, Gilbertsnot) 3rd grade class.

We were given 10 to 15 minutes at the end of certain days to write in our journals. I loved this time. This is my journal.

I’ve corrected some spelling, and (inserted) a few words for clarity.   So when you see a parenthesis I’ve entered some words for clarity and readability.

Let’s begin xp…

9-8

My sister gave me a Motley Crue shirt. My brother got hit by glass on his shoulder. My sister came to see what happened. She said “Get Up!” Because she thought he was faking it.

—Backstory—-

I was obsessed with heavy metal hair bands, and loved my Motley Crue shirt. I wore it every day. I remember one day I used some halloween hair dye and sprayed a patch of my hair red like Nikki Six. I cut a circle out of a piece of paper,  and spayed a giant red circle right on the spot where monks are bald. My teacher saw it and thought I was bleeding.  But then left me alone after seeing it was dye. I also had my ear pierced.  and a fatty mullet. My favorite band was AC/DC and I idolised Angus Young.

In the episode to which I’m referring I was playing catch in my great Aunt Lillian’s apartment. my sister Sarah had been designated the duty of babysitting my brother and I.  I threw a ball, it hit the light fixture: broke, and a shard stuck into the top of my brother’s shoulder. My sister came in after hearing the screams and thought that he was just acting hurt. Even though he had a chunk of glass sticking out of his shoulder.

9-9

I went to the AC/DC concert. My Dad (gave me) 20 dollars to spend on anything I wanted. The first group wasn’t that good (it was Queensryche) but AC/DC was the best. I got (home) at 11:05. The next day was the first day of school. The last song (they played) was “for those about to rock”. Some cannons came out of the sides of the stage. The lead singer said “fire”. He said that three times, and my ears are still ringing.

Backstory: I had agreed with my father to wax the floor in the den every day (a very strange task) all summer in exchange for a 16 dollar ticket to see AC/DC.  I remember this was also the summer that we got cable so every day while I waxed the floor (it was very shiny) I also watched a lot of Nickelodeon. I was especially intrigued by the show the “Mysterious Lost Cities of Gold” an d actually looked forward to the work.

Going to the AC/DC concert was super important for me. I looked forward to it all summer. The incident to which I’m referring can be seen in the video below.

This is video taken from the same “who made who” tour of 1985-86 that I saw. Seeing this concert changed my life. For real.

Here’s the image on the shirt to which I am referring.
